L'association EFGH cherche des professeurs de français

L’association EFGH est en train de recruter des professeurs et des assistants pour enseigner le français en « afterschool » pour des enfants de 5 à 16 ans.
Cette association vient de se former en avril 2010 sous la volonté de parents bénévoles et est à but non lucratif. Les enseignants seront rémunérés à un taux tout à fait comparable à celui de cours particuliers. Les groupes seront de 8 à 15 enfants au plus.
Les classes auront lieu dans des endroits divers mais en général dans les écoles (publiques pour l’instant mais peut-être aussi privées) afin d’éviter le plus le déplacement des enfants. Le weekend il est possible que les cours (pour les élèves de collège et lycée) se déroulent dans les antennes du Houston Public Library mais cela reste à déterminer selon la demande.

Summer workshop at Austin College (Sherman, TX)

Austin College, in Sherman, will offer its annual week-long summer institute for high school teachers of French, German, Latin and Spanish July 18-23, 2010. The Institute offers a language immersion experience for teachers and helps them share teaching ideas and materials. All costs of attending the Institute are provided to the accepted participants (room, board, materials); the teachers only need pay for their transportation to Sherman, which is 60 miles due north of Dallas.

Teachers can visit the Austin College Summer Language Institute website http://cml.austincollege.edu/Institute2010/ for more information and to download an application. Space is limited, so teachers are encouraged to apply early. The application postmark deadline is April 30. We encourage all interested language teachers to take advantage of this excellent opportunity to study with the Austin College faculty and enhance their language skills. Et Voilà Théâtre presents La Maison de Bernarda Alba
by Federico García Lorca
in French and Spanish with English surtitles

The House of Bernarda Alba, Federico García Lorca's last play, was written in 1936, a few months before Lorca was jailed and executed. Besides being one of the great 20th century playwrights, Federico García Lorca was an outstanding poet. Wishing to honor his writing genius, the play will include selected poems recited in Spanish from "Romancero Gitano" by a special guest, actor Antonio Mazu, who will portray the role of Federico García Lorca. French sculptor Véronique Chalandar is coming from Paris at the invitation of Et Voilà Théâtre, to create a scenic design inspired by the feminine characters of this play. She will use a technique that has been reproduced in all her "Originelles" collection: a sculpture built on a very fine structure, to emphasize the elevation of the characters, liberated from the traditional aesthetic models.

Special Opportunity at Opera in the Heights

George B. Geary Student Outreach Initiative

Through a generous grant from George B. Geary, the Opera in the Heights is able to fund free student and chaperone opera tickets for groups of 15-50, plus bus, for their upcoming production of La Bohème. The funding is available for groups from middle school through college. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in Lambert Hall, 1703 Heights Boulevard, Houston 77008

There are two ways to participate in the initiative:
1. Group Offer: Groups of a minimum size of 15 and a maximum size of 50 may reserve seats for Thursday or Friday night performances. Since a limited number of these group reservations may be accommodated, they will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. This weekend, I indulged a guily pleasure of mine... Sonic. Not to worry: some good came of it! Had I not gone, I wouldn't have learned about a great program going on right now called Limeades for Learning that allows you to vote on your favorite funding proposals by teachers all over the nation. I went to the website and search for French and came across one. Needless to say, that's who got my vote! I hope they get yours, too! Next time you go to Sonic, get any drink, peel off the voting code, go to the website, and vote for the project of your choice (it's a joint venture between Sonic and DonorsChoose.Org). Hurry though... the program ends October 1.

Dear fellow French teachers,

Thanks to all of you who attended this most recent fall meeting of the Houston Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French. I am sure you will agree that it was filled to the brim with useful and entertaining information. The other AATF-Houston officers and I are most pleased to announce to you all our new Houston Director for the National French Contest (NFC) / Grand concours, Mr. Jeffrey P. Roberts. Jeff is currently serving as the International Baccalaureate Coordinator at the Westchester Academy for International Studies. I have had the pleasure of knowing Jeff for a few years now, as he is also an Adjunct Instructor of French here with me at Lone Star College-CyFair. Please join me in giving Jeff a warm welcome! Dates and other info for (early March) exam pick-up, administering, & return and the eventual ceremony (toward the end of the school year around early May) are, indeed, forthcoming (yes, we are keeping that new tradition going of examens sur place!): please be patient while Jeff adjusts to his new duties, and you will hear all you need to know from him soon!

Likewise, please join me in expressing sincere thanks to the wonderful Ann Clogan from Strake Jesuit who did an absolutely knock-out job this past year with the grand concours. We’re at record levels of participation and placement, and this is in no small part thanks to the practices Ann implemented so very handily. While Ann has stepped down as the contest director, she’s still a chapter member and hasn’t left Strake Jesuit, of course. I am sure we can expect many more great things from her as a stellar teacher, a supporter and exponent of success in French teaching and learning, an AATF-Houston family member, and someone I have proudly come to call a friend. Chapeau, Ann!

In the meantime, to assure your students’ eligibility for participation in the contest, please be sure to have your AATF membership up-to-date and your chapter affiliation done so as well. As of last year, all teachers who participate in the Houston area must be current AATF members who have affiliated to the Houston chapter.

Greetings, colleagues,

It is with a heavy heart that we, the officers of AATF-Houston, have decided to cancel this year’s distribution des prix ceremony that was to be held tomorrow afternoon at the University of St. Thomas. We have decided to do so for the safety of all concerned, especially in light of the fact that similar academic UIL events have also been interrupted across Texas due to the influenza situation. Know that this is only a one-time occurrence, and that, in the years to come, we have every intention of continuing this grand and unique tradition of ours to which I was looking forward with great anticipation.

Teachers whose students were to be recognized should contact our chapter’s NFC director, Ann Clogan, to make arrangements to collect their certificates and prizes as soon as possible. Ann can be reached by e-mail at aclogan@strakejesuit.org. Please be so kind as to contact her before May 15 to collect your students’ materials. Teachers of students who placed highly can also expect to be contacted soon about the possibility of their participating in Destination France. You will hear more about this soon, in the weeks that follow, from our own Claude Boutin.

Join me in expressing thanks to Ann for all her work on this year’s contest and, of course, to Dr. Rolande Leguillon for having once again offered to host us for our ceremony in the excellent facilities of the University of St. Thomas.

Le compositeur de musiques de films Maurice Jarre est mort

Maurice Jarre, mort à Los Angeles des suites d'un cancer à l'âge de 84 ans dans la nuit de samedi à dimanche, est l'auteur de nombreuses musiques mythiques de films, parmi lesquels Docteur Jivago, Lawrence d'Arabie et Paris brûle-t-il ?.

Compositeur le plus récompensé par les Oscars avec trois statuettes pour Lawrence d'Arabie (1962), Docteur Jivago (1965) et La Route des Indes (1984), Maurice Jarre a signé plus de 150 musiques de films pour les plus grands réalisateurs : John Frankenheimer, Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston ou Luchino Visconti.

Le musicien avait signé sa première musique de film en 1952 à la demande du cinéaste Georges Franju pour le court-métrage Hôtel des Invalides. Maurice Jarre, qui s'était installé aux Etats-Unis au milieu des années 60 puis en Suisse avant de revenir à Los Angeles, a également signé les musiques des films Le Président (Henri Verneuil), Jésus de Nazareth (Franco Zeffirelli, 1976), Witness (Peter Weir, 1985) et Le Cercle des poètes disparus (Peter Weir, 1989).

Le compositeur avait fêté ses cinquante ans de carrière en 2006 en donnant à l'Auditorium de Lyon, sa ville natale, un concert retraçant ses plus grandes œuvres, en présence de son fils, le musicien Jean-Michel Jarre. Sa vocation était née, quand il était enfant, de l'écoute d'un enregistrement de la 2e Rhapsodie hongroise de Liszt par Léopold Stokowski. Après des études musicales, il était devenu percussionniste-timbalier et avait formé en 1946 un duo avec le compositeur Pierre Boulez pour la compagnie de Théâtre Renaud-Barrault. Cinq ans plus tard, Jean Vilar lui commandait la partition du Prince de Hombourg, joué au Festival d'Avignon par Gérard Philipe et Jeanne Moreau.

Maurice Jarre a composé et écrit aussi plusieurs ballets pour l'Opéra de Paris, notamment Notre-Dame-de Paris. En février dernier, lors de sa dernière apparition publique en Europe, il avait reçu un Ours d'or au Festival de Berlin pour l'ensemble de sa carrière.

This just in, from the French Consulate of Houston! Read on...

The cultural department of the General Consulate of France in Houston organizes an exceptional event ; a free screening of French short films on the occasion of the Houston International Film Festival on Friday, April 24 at the AMC Theater (2949 Dunvale, Houston, TX 77063) at 1:00 pm. The duration of the show is 1h05. Those films are made in a very up-to-date style, well-liked by young people.

We are delighted to invite you and your students to enjoy, at no cost, this rare selection of recent shorts, produced during the past three years. All students from 12 years-old onwards are welcome. The films are truly entertaining and educational as well. This event could be very interesting for French learners but also for a larger public as all films are presented with English subtitles.

I attached the program to the present mail. You may prepare this viewing by making your students guess the subjects of the films based on the titles and pictures.Three of the 6 films presented will be available on DVD to teachers as well as teachers' notes and worksheets in order to study them in class. (NB: for the original attached content, contact Mme Maurannes).

The award-winning Houston Chapter is proud to announce its new slate of officers! David Timms will continue to serve as secretary, Gerri Manlove will remain treasurer, and Rolande Leguillon will continue as historian. Our new president is Georges Detiveaux (Lone Star College-CyFair), our vice president is Roya McArthur (Cy-Woods High School), and our new NFC Administrator is Ann Clogan (Strake Jesuit College Preparatory). The entire chapter thanks outgoing president Wendy Kirkle for her wonderful service and wishes her the best! Merci mille fois, Wendy!

AATF-Houston held a brief (albeit standing room only!) fall 2008 meeting in conjunction with October's conference of the Texas Foreign Language Association in North Houston at the Hilton Greenspoint Hotel. The main topic of discussion, led by one of our new officers, Ann Clogan, was new practices and processes for students and teachers participating in the National French Contest (this information was also expanded upon at the spring meeting). Other issues presented were placement of students visiting from France through the ORCA program (administered by Claude Boutin), as well as preparations for the Texas French Symposium (presided over by Toby Freeman, who also reiterated the importance of participating in this great event at the spring meeting). You may recall that Toby Freeman is also the Houston area's latest exponent of French culture to be named a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques. Félicitations, Toby!

Our spring meeting, held on January 31 in the charming ambiance of the Alliance française de Houston, opened with entertaining reports from two students who participated in the ORCA / Destination France scholarship exchange program. The spring meeting was also the occasion for us to welcome Marie Maurannes, Attachée culturelle adjointe du Consulat de Houston, who presented to the chapter several events planned to celebrate March's French Cultures Festival (le mois de la Francophonie). Mlle Maurannes, who has a background in FLE, was very well received at the meeting. Several members stayed afterwards to continue their animated discussions with her. President Georges Detiveaux presented plans for AATF-Houston's main contribution to the French Cultures Festival: a Saturday professional development event for high school and college teachers of French, history, and sociology. This teacher training workshop, entitled Teaching the Holocaust: la France, la Shoah, et la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale, will take place on March 7 at Lone Star College-CyFair (more here). This workshop will be led by Professor Eileen Angelini from Canisius College. Many other French Cultures Festival events are listed in a calendar online. President Georges Detiveaux and Secretary David Timms have been working diligently with the French Consulate since late fall on planning and promoting these exciting events!

Current activities in the Houston chapter include assisting the French Consulate with promoting events for the French Cultures Festival, planning for the awards ceremony for Houston winners of the National French Contest, as well as planning for March's professional development event.

Le cinéma français en deuil. Claude Berri est mort lundi matin des suites "d'un accident vasculaire cérébral" à l'âge de 74 ans à l'hôpital de la Salpétrière. Le cinéaste, qui souffrait d'un hématome intracrânien, avait été admis dans le service de réanimation chirurgicale de l'hôpital parisien dans la nuit de samedi à dimanche. Il était depuis dans un "état neurologique très sévère". Il avait déjà été victime d'un accident vasculaire cérébral en 2006. Né Claude Langmann, à Paris en 1934, Claude Berri avait commencé sa carrière en jouant au théâtre. Derrière la caméra, il avait connu de nombreux succès, dont notamment, "Tchao Pantin", qui avait valu à Coluche le César du meilleur acteur en 1984, ou encore "Manon des sources" et "Jean de Florette".En tant que producteur, Claude Berri avait soutenu des projets comme "l'Ours" et "L'amant" de Jean-Jacques Annaud, ou encore "la Reine Margot", avec Isabelle Adjani. Récemment, il avait produit "Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis" de Dany Boon, le plus grand succès de tous les temps au box-office français. La dernière apparition publique de Claude Berri remontait au mois de février, lors de la cérémonie des Césars. Sa production "la Graine et le Mulet", y était sacrée meilleur film de l'année. Claude Berri était le père de l'acteur producteur Thomas Langmann et de l'acteur Julien Rassam, décédé en 2002.
"La figure la plus légendaire du cinéma français" Nicolas Sarkozy a rendu hommage à Claude Berri, saluant "la figure la plus légendaire du cinéma français". "Claude Berri, c'était l'acteur, le scénariste mais surtout l'un des réalisateurs et producteurs les plus doués de sa génération. C'était le grand ambassadeur du 7ème art français à travers le monde. Tous ceux qui l'ont connu ou approché sont en deuil", a déclaré le chef de l'Etat. Et d'ajouter : "il savait oeuvrer dans tous les registres et nous faire rire ou pleurer, mais surtout il amenait son public à réfléchir et à s'interroger, il éduquait le spectateur. Plus encore, il a mis en valeur tous les plus grands acteurs du cinéma français et révélé leur personnalité (...) Cet homme de caractère laissera durablement son empreinte artistique. Pour beaucoup, il restera un modèle".

In observance of March’s French Cultures Festival (le mois de la Francophonie), when various events around the world celebrate the cultures of French-speaking countries everywhere, AATF-Houston, Lone Star College-CyFair's Department of World Languages and the French Consulate of Houston are pleased to announce another exciting professional development event for area high school and college instructors.

AATF-Houston will welcome Dr. Eileen Angelini, Professor of French and Chair of the Department of Modern Languages at Canisius College (Buffalo, NY). Dr. Angelini, along with Barbara P. Barnett, produced and directed the documentary film La France Divisée, which explores events in France during the World War II from many perspectives.
After a screening of the film (approx. 30 minutes), Professor Angelini will guide attendees through an interactive session on the film's uses and general best practices in teaching the Holocaust. The session will be conducted in English and will use images and other pedagogical materials that will be provided to all. High school teachers and college instructors of history and sociology will also benefit from attending.

Registration is $25.00 for AATF members / $35.00 for non-members ($15 for full-time advanced undergrads and grad students planning to enter the teaching profession... mail proof of full-time SPRING 2009 enrollment to treasurer). Le XIIème sommet de la Francophonie qui s'est tenu du 17 au 19 octobre s'est achevé dimanche sur fond de crise financière.

Le Sommet de la Francophonie rassemble, tous les deux ans, les dirigeants des États et gouvernements membres de l'Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF).

Le Premier ministre Stephen Harper a déclaré en clôture que ce XIIème Sommet de la Francophonie, avait été une grande réussite et a conclu son exposé en félicitant la République de Madagascar, qui sera l'hôte du XIIIème Sommet de la Francophonie, en 2010.

This year’s event features the work of guest artists Régine Gaud and Gerard Visser of Lyon, France.

Making A Mark® is a program that provides children who are touched by cancer and blood disorders with an outlet to express themselves through art and writing with the help of professional artists and writers. This break from the hospital routine gives the children a chance to explore their emotions, fears and concerns in an uplifting environment. By controlling the creative process and sharing their individual creativity, the children can begin to heal emotionally and cope with an illness over which they have little control.

It is a pleasure to invite you and your students to participate in the 2009 Texas French Symposium, which will be held at Eisenhower High School, Aldine Independent School District, Houston, Texas,

February 27 - 28, 2009. The theme for this year’s competition is: “Paris Ville de Lumière.” The Texas Education Agency recognizes Symposium as the official state competition for high school French students.

Past experience has shown that both students and teachers benefit in many ways from attending and competing at Symposium. Trophies and awards are given to students and school teams who win events, as well as to the top ten schools and individual student winners. Generous scholarships for study in francophone countries are awarded each year to top students. Depending upon availability, teacher scholarships may also be offered. The spirit of competition encourages students to work hard and to do their best. Students also benefit from the cultural events which take place during the Symposium.

We again find it necessary to request that each participating school bring a French-speaking judge. In addition, we could use judges in music, art, as well as proctors for the 4 tests.

If you wish to register for this event, please complete the enclosed RSVP form, and include a $50.00 deposit (non-refundable). This deposit will be applied toward your registration fees. RSVP forms must be postmarked by October 6, 2008.

Nouvelles plaques d'immatriculation pour les Français

Dans un an, les bonnes vieilles plaques d’immatriculation affichant le numéro du département seront jetées aux oubliettes pour faire place à une uniformisation européenne.
Dès l’année prochaine, la route des vacances n’aura plus la même saveur, pour les petits et les grands : le 1er janvier 2009 sonnera le glas des plaques minéralogiques par départements. En cause, des démarches considérées par le ministère de l’Intérieur « trop compliquées » pour les usagers. Notamment car l’actuel fichier national des immatriculations (FNI) ne permet pas des formalités via le Net. En outre, le FNI est jugé trop « ancien » (il date de 1950) et ne serait « pas entièrement fiable ». Certains propriétaires omettraient de déclarer la destruction de leur véhicule, et des erreurs se seraient glissées dans le fichier d’adresses. Enfin, concernant Paris, le dispositif actuel de numérotation « va s’épuiser d’ici 2016-2018 ». Désormais, chaque véhicule sera doté d’un numéro à vie, de type « AA-123-AA ». Une réforme en application d’une directive européenne, qui concerne plus de 36 millions de conducteurs français.

Les automobilistes attachés à leur territoire
Mais le futur système d’immatriculation des véhicules (SIV) n’est pas du goût de tout le monde. Selon un sondage Ifop, 64 % des Français y sont opposés. La plus nostalgique étant la France rurale avec 70 % de mécontents contre 51 % en agglomération parisienne. Et la nouvelle provoque carrément l’ire au sein des conseils généraux ! Les élus s’insurgent que l’on s’attaque à leur identité. « Pour tenir compte de l’attachement des automobilistes à leur territoire, ils pourront, s’ils le souhaitent, faire suivre le numéro d’une identification locale : le numéro actuel et un logo », répond le ministère de l’Intérieur. Seulement voilà, cette mention géographique reste facultative… Campagne de contestation, vote d’une motion rendant obligatoire l’apposition du numéro et du logo et autres mouvements contestataires risquent bien de se développer jusqu’à l’année prochaine. Yves Saint Laurent, l'un des couturiers majeurs du XXe siècle qui a donné une nouvelle liberté aux femmes en leur créant une garde-robe contemporaine, est décédé d’un cancer dimanche soir à l'âge de 71 ans, a-t-on appris auprès de la Fondation Bergé-Saint Laurent. Né le 1er août 1936 à Oran (Algérie), celui qui s'appelle alors Yves-Mathieu Saint-Laurent a connu la gloire très jeune. Arrivé à Paris à 17 ans, le dessinateur de modèles est devenu rapidement le collaborateur de Christian Dior (1954), puis son successeur après le décès brutal du maître en 1957. Dès son premier défilé en 1958, le jeune directeur artistique rencontre le succès grâce à sa ligne "Trapèze" qui rompt avec les tailles de guêpe de l'époque. En 1961, il crée sa propre maison en partenariat avec Pierre Bergé. Ensemble, l'un créateur, l'autre gestionnaire, ils vont bâtir un empire dont le logo de trois lettres noires entrelacées sur fond crème fera le tour du monde. Il a fait ses adieux à la couture en 2002 après 40 ans de succès et de modèles emblématiques comme le tailleur-pantalon, le smoking ou le caban aux côtés d'une couture rajeunie. L'essayiste et conservateur général du patrimoine Jean Clair, ancien directeur du Musée Picasso à Paris, entre à l'Académie française. Jean Clair, de son vrai nom Gérard Régnier, a été élu au fauteuil qu'occupait Bertrand Poirot-Delpech, au premier tour de scrutin, jeudi 22 mai, par 16 voix contre 7 à l'homme d'affaires et mécène Pierre Bergé. Né en 1940, il fait des études de lettres avant de devenir conservateur au Musée national d'art moderne à partir de 1966. Directeur de la revue L'Art vivant de 1970 à 1975, il est alors l'une des figures en vue du monde artistique parisien.

Après la disparition de sa revue, Jean Clair rejoint le Centre Georges-Pompidou, où il dirige les Cahiers du Musée national d'Art moderne de 1978 à 1986. Il est le commissaire des expositions "Marcel Duchamp" en 1977, "Les Réalismes" en 1980, "Vienne, l'apocalypse joyeuse" en 1986 ainsi que de rétrospectives monographiques consacrées à Bonnard et Balthus. Il se dirige par la suite vers une réflexion historique sur les relations entre l'art et les disciplines scientifiques - anatomie, médecine, psychiatrie - à l'époque moderne.

Deux expositions au Grand Palais sont issues de ces travaux, "L'âme au corps" en 1993 et, en 2005, "Mélancolie, génie et folie en Occident", qui a obtenu un grand succès de fréquentation. Des ouvrages à caractère historique accompagnent cette démarche, particulièrement Méduse. Contribution à une anthropologie des arts visuels (Gallimard, 1989).

Bien qu'ayant dirigé le Musée Picasso de 1989 à 2005, Jean Clair conduit à partir des années 1980 une polémique constante et souvent véhémente contre l'art contemporain et contre le surréalisme. En 1983, dans ses Considérations sur l'état des beaux-arts (Gallimard), il entend dénoncer la disparition des traditions artistiques traditionnelles.

Depuis lors, de nombreux ouvrages polémiques, de La Responsabilité de l'artiste (Gallimard, 1997) à Journal atrabilaire (Gallimard, 2006) et à Malaise dans les musées (Flammarion, 2007), ont fait de lui l'un des principaux représentants du courant antimoderne. Grâce au soutien partiel du Service Culturel, nous aurons l’occasion possible d’accueillir le professeur, Francis Yaiche, ici à Houston le 16 et 17 juin 2008. Professeur Yaiche est connu pour son travail sur les simulations globales dans l'enseignement des langues étrangères. Le sujet choisi sera basé sur les réponses des participants. Parmi nos sujets possibles sont :

- les simulations globales

- le photos-expressions : comment utiliser le support photo dans la classe

- les activités et les jeux à l’oral et à l’écrit

- la publicité française : analyse et production (sémiologie et/ou atelier de pub)

- théories et pratiques de la communication dans la classe de langue

mais aussi :

- improvisation

- conte

- l’étude d’un roman dans la classe de FLE (français langue étrangère)

L’atelier est prévenu à durer approximativement 5 heures, 9h – 15h y compris une heure pour le déjeuner chaque jour, donc 10 heures en total. LoneStar College-CyFair à Hwy 290 et Barker-Cypress est le lieu donné gracieusement par notre V-P, Georges Detiveaux.

Malheureusement, votre cotisation AATF ne couvre pas tous les frais de cet entraînement, mais vous bénéficiez d’un coût réduit de $35.00 au lieu de $45.00 pour les non-membres. Cet événement est ouvert à tous les professeurs de français, membres de l’AATF ou pas. Des certificats de 'professional development' seront disonibles sur place.

Lone Star College-CyFair (Barker Cypress, south of 290) is looking for an adjunct faculty member to teach short duration, non-credit, conversational French courses beginning in the fall of 2008. The courses only last for a few weeks, and would meet in the evenings, once or twice a week, depending on the instructor’s scheduling preferences. The continuing education courses are mostly for adult community members taking conversation French for personal enrichment. For this reason, we’re looking for an animated, dedicated teacher with native or near-native fluency with travel experience in the Francophone world to facilitate basic conversations in functional task-based situations using the Schaum’s Communicating in French series. Houghton Mifflin invites COLLEGE & UNIVERSITY world language instructors to a free professional development technology symposium in Houston, TX on Saturday, March 8th from 9:30-3 pm. It will be hosted by University of Houston on their campus. Room location at UH will be determined and sent in subsequent follow-up message.
